Abstract

This work is a result of the research conducted for the Research Institute of Radar Technique, Pardubice, Czechoslovakia during final two years of my study at the Czech Technical University, Prague in 1984 and 1985. The aim of the research was to produce a prototype of an Expert System for a fault location and diagnostics of radar.

At the beginning it introduces principles and ideas of expert systems and describes several approaches used before 1985. Then it discusses different knowledge representation techniques, inference mechanisms and uncertain reasoning problems. The techniques used in PROSPECTOR and FEL-EXPERT version 1.5 (Expert System Shell developed at the Prague Institute of Technology) Expert Systems are described in detail in the next chapter.

Main objective of the research is stated in the next chapter. Radar is considered to be a very complex system containing digital, analogue and mechanical parts. Fault diagnosis of a radar is a complex task, and expert system is desirable to assist fault finding. I produced a prototype for a fault diagnosis of the main power circuits, which worked as expected.

Next chapter describes in detail principles and techniques used for knowledge base generating, it's semantic and grammar and part of the user manual of FEL-EXPERT. Finally there is a description of created knowledge base and listing of several consultations.

This work and its results prove that using the Expert Systems in radar diagnostics and fault location is feasible and beneficial. The results of the consultations with created prototype were comparable to or even better than results given by the qualified expert service person.
